Have a ‘ball’ changing lives right across Australia
The STEPS Grand Winter Ball isn’t the only thing that’s gone online in 2020. In response to COVID-19, our Pathways College day program went online and is now reaching students all over Australia.
The STEPS Pathways College day program was created to provide flexible learning for students who are not ready or able to live at the College. The program had been offered on the Sunshine Coast, but with COVID-19 attending class was no longer an option.
Believing it was vital to keep young adults with a disability engaged and learning, and wanting to reduce experiences of social isolation, College staff worked tirelessly to do what had never been done before – they created a new online program to teach independent living skills to young adults living with disability.
What resulted has been incredibly exciting: students from as far away as Tasmania, Western Australia and Alice Springs, are enrolling in the online program. Previously young people living in remote areas just didn’t have this kind of opportunity and they are loving it. The online program has been so successful that it will now be a permanent offering of STEPS Pathways College.
STEPS Pathways manager, DJ McGlynn says the exponential growth of their programs is a true testament to their success.
“Every single element of our training program has an educational underpinning, we see it working everyday as we witness the confidence and capacity of our students grow,” DJ said.
“I’m constantly surprised by how much a student can do when given the opportunity.
“All the students are growing in different ways,” he said.
Looking to the future, the passionate team at STEPS have very big plans on the table, and they invite you to join them as a much-needed supporter of STEPS Charity, to help keep the college going, and the dreams of so many families alive.
For STEPS Managing Director, Carmel Crouch the way forward is clear. “Now we’re clear how successful the STEPS Pathways College learning model is, expansion is the way forward for us, to build another college, even another couple of colleges.”
“There’s very few programs that start, that are so instantly successful, and this has been, and it’s because of the passion behind the people who are working in it.
“It’s really hard to fail at something, when everybody has no expectation that there’s going to be any failure, that everybody believes it’s going to be an amazing success.
“And young people’s future happiness is at stake, and when you have people that are passionate about what they do and know they are making an incredible difference in somebody’s life, it’s a great motivator.”
